Giving Opportunities:

Caring & Outreach Ministry
The following letter was sent to all Calvary members.

Dear Calvary Friends:
I (Glenn Anderson) was having a conversation with a couple from Calvary a week ago, and this is what they said: “We feel so helpless. So many people in our church and broader community have been devastated by the virus and the resulting economic slowdown. We count ourselves among the fortunate that have not been as severely affected as many, so we feel a need to find a way to help our church family and community in any way we can.”

We know exactly how this couple feels.  As a congregation, we are known for our service to each other and our communities (Park Rapids, San Pedro, etc.), but the social distancing efforts have made us question how we can best respond. While we don’t fully understand what all the impacts will be, this we know: many families will be greatly affected in the coming weeks and months, and Calvary can make a real difference in people’s lives.

To help address the growing needs, a group of Calvary members, with the full support of Calvary leadership, are mobilizing to increase our capacity to respond to these short and long-term needs.  The goal is to raise funds for Calvary’s Caring and Outreach Ministry (e.g., Hard Hat, Pine Point, Jail Ministry, Puerto Rico, Eagle Pass, and others). This will allow Calvary to increase the work done in each ministry area, and expand into new areas that respond to shorter term community need. To be clear, this is separate and distinct from the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund.

Some of you have been severely affected by the economic downturn; for that we are truly sorry. It is for families like yours that we are undertaking this effort. Others have been fortunate enough to avoid the worst of the economic downturn. This letter is meant for you.

We ask that you consider a donation, using some of your federal relief check to help those in need. Donations can be made either via check to Calvary Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 187., Park Rapids, MN 56470, with the phrase “Caring and Outreach Ministry” in the memo line, or on-line at Calvary’s website (www.calvaryparkrapids.com) by going to “Donations” and then selecting “Caring and Outreach Ministry“.

We are very excited about this opportunity to expand our Church’s work to meet our communities’ needs. Just through word of mouth, we have already received commitments of almost $10,000. Please prayerfully consider joining us in this movement. Just think of the impact we can make together!

Pastor Discretion Fund

Our Mission is to meet the immediate “emergency needs” of our church family members as well as to those who walk in off the street for assistance. “Opening the doors to establish relationships.” We do this through:
  • Calvary’s outreach ministry in action.
  • Providing voucher for immediate needs (gasoline, food and clothing).
  • Referrals to other agencies when appropriate.
  • Administered by the Pastor and trained lay assistants.
  • Pastor’s – walk-in’s, scheduled appointments by lay persons on Thursdays (2-4 PM)
  • Funded by non-budgeted contributions from Calvary members.

Thank you for supporting this emergency fund for people in our community.

Mission Partners

Iglesia Luterana San Lucas: Eagle Pass, Texas (Pastor Julio Vasquez)

In 1994, Calvary established San Lucas Lutheran Church (Iglesia Luterana San Lucas) as a Mission Partner. San Lucas Church is a Spanish-speaking congregation of the ELCA in Eagle Pass, Texas located at the US/Mexico border. San Lucas strives to support itself yet expenses cannot be covered without help from partners like Calvary.
The congregation is the third largest congregation in Eagle Pass with regular attendance of about 130 people, mostly poor and middle low class Hispanics. Community outreach involves coaching on health, family behavior & how to become a better family. Every Tuesday & Thursday, a Food Bank “Colmado” provides food to the community, averaging about 48 families per month.

Support this Mission Partner through your offering (check “Mission Partner” on offering envelope, please indicate “Eagle Pass” on envelope and/or check memo).

Iglesia Evangelica Luterana San Pedro: Tao Baja, Puerto Rico

(Pastor Alicia)

In February of 2019, Calvary established San Pedro Lutheran Church of Toa Baja, Puerto Rico as a Mission Partner. San Pedro acts as a service center for the entire community during emergencies.
In June of 2019, Pastor Alicia identified an immediate need for a generator ($1,000) that will allow them to continue this important work as they prepare for the hurricane season. Through Calvary’s generous giving, we were able to raise enough money to provide this much needed generator.
There will be four mission groups from Calvary traveling to Puerto Rico (from November 2019 to June 2020) to work with our Mission Partner San Pedro Lutheran Church (in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) with on-going efforts to rebuild and recover following Hurricane Maria in 2017. Fundraising for building supplies, tools and equipment are underway.

Support this Mission Partner by donating on-line or through your offering (check “Mission Partner” on offering envelope, please indicate “Puerto Rico” on envelope and/or check memo).
