Our Mission and Purpose: As a community of women created in the image of God, called to discipleship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world.

A Message from Calvary Women in Ministry… January 2020

Meet our new SWO president. Prayerfully consider the opportunities that you might like to be involved with in 2020!
“Greetings Sisters in Christ, thank you for your confidence in my leadership to elect me as your next president. I am humbled and excited to begin this journey with you. Our 2019 SWO Convention was held at Luther Crest Bible Camp near Alexandria, MN. We had an inspiring convention with great speakers, educational breakout sessions, delicious food and of course we completed the business of the Synodical Women’s Organization. I am happy to announce that our 2020 SWO Convention will be September 18 & 19 at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN. It will be hosted by Conferences 1,2,3. Mark your calendars and make plans to attend. We are making the transition from fall to winter. Just as the seasons are changing so are changes coming to WELCA. We will keep you posted on those changes and ask for your prayers as we make this journey. The 11th Triennial Gathering is in Phoenix, AZ on July 16-19, 2020. Prayerfully consider attending. Again, thank you for your support and join me on this journey the next 2 years.”
In Christ’s Service,
Marilyn Grandstand, President

Thank you to Marlene Kyllonen for inspiring us
to begin a new ministry. We have assembled activity bags (includes a toy, books, & snack) for parents to give their small children while perhaps spending hours in the Emergency Room waiting room.
These are being used and well received.
Thank you, Marlene!

Quilter’s Corner – January 2020

In early December we delivered 138 quilts to Wadena for shipping to MPLS to the Lutheran World Relief distribution center. In June, 144 were shipped. Quilts were also given to all our senior graduates and many have been taken to Puerto Rico on Calvary’s mission trips. The quilts were blessed at church services prior to shipment. I had invited a friend, Mary, who has been interested in what we do, to attend the blessing and see the many quilts. Upon the invitation, I received the following response immediately. She is now a retired principal but has traveled and worked all over the world encountering many experiences. She gave me permission to share her response as it touched all of us at quilting. We never know who receives the quilts individually but hope that her experiences tell us in a personal way of the reality of needs around the world, as those who have gone to Puerto Rico on Calvary’s mission trips have also seen firsthand.

“Thanks for letting me know (about the Blessing of the Quilts), I will be at the late service. My mind goes to the young kid picking up grains of split rice in Beijing, the grain spread on rural highways in India for trucks to winnow, the 14 year old girl just married to the 16 year old school teacher in an isolated village in the High Atlas of Morocco, (I hope he’s kept her warm), the women in Borneo who thought I was the nurse cycling into their village! (They fed me pancakes), the graduate students who lived in chilly dormitory rooms in Zion, China and studied like crazy. My mind wanders to mom who sewed quilts for families on the reservations. I will be there for the blessing of the many quilts, spreading warmth and friendship from the people of northern MN.”

January quilting dates are Mondays, January 13th & 27th starting at 9:00 AM.  We have lots of fabric to cut so if you have quilt cutting tools, please consider bringing them and cutting fabric on those days. Thanks!
